The Influence of Bulge Profile Shapes on Claims for a Scale-free Hubble Sequence for Spiral Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate recent claims that the Hubble sequence of spiral galaxies is scale-free. Fundamental to this investigation is the fact that within the photometric data of 86 spiral galaxies from de Jong & van der Kruit (1994) from which these claims were made a trend exists between morphological type and bulge profile shape. While late-type spiral bulges are described by an exponential luminosity profile, the early-type spiral bulges are better described by an r or r law. Taking the scale-lengths from the best-fitting surface brightness profile models (i.e. either using exponential, r, or r law profile parameters), we show that in all six passbands used (BVRIHK) the early-type spirals have a larger re/h ratio than late-type spiral galaxies. In contrast to this, fitting an exponential profile to the bulges of all spirals results in the mean re/h ratio for the early-type spiral galaxies actually being smaller than the mean re/h ratio for the late-type spiral galaxies (at the 3σ significance level using K-band data). متن کاملGalactic Bulges from Hubble Space Telescope Nicmos Observations: Global Scaling Relations
We investigate bulge and disk scaling relations using a volume-corrected sample of earlyto intermediate-type disk galaxies in which, importantly, the biasing flux from additional nuclear components on the inner bulge light-profile has been modeled and removed. Structural parameters are obtained from a seeing-convolved, bulge+disk+nuclear-component decomposition applied to NIR surface brightness...
متن کاملA MORPHOLOGICAL-TYPE DEPENDENCE IN THE μ0–log h PLANE OF SPIRAL GALAXY DISKS
We present observational evidence for a galaxy ‘Type’ dependence to the location of a spiral galaxy’s disk parameters in the μ0–log h plane. With a sample of ∼40 Low Surface Brightness galaxies (both bulgeand disk-dominated) and ∼80 High Surface Brightness galaxies, the early-type disk galaxies (≤Sc) tend to define a bright envelope in the μ0–logh plane, while the late-type (≥Scd) spiral galaxi...
متن کاملThe Influence of Triaxial Halos on Collisionless Galactic Disks
We investigate the effect of rotating, triaxial halos on disk galaxies through an extensive set of numerical N -body simulations. Our simulations use a rigid potential field for the halos and bulges and collisionless particles for the disks. The triaxiality and the rotation rate of the halo are varied, as well as the masses of all three galaxy components. We analyze both the bar stability and t...
متن کاملBulge and Halo Kinematics across the Hubble Sequence
The correlation between the maximum rotational velocity of the disk (υm) and the central stellar velocity dispersion of the bulge (σ0) offers insights into the relationship between the halo and the bulge. We have assembled integrated H I line widths and central stellar velocity dispersions to study the υm–σ0 relation for 792 galaxies spanning a broad range of Hubble types. Contrary to earlier s...
